Alpro speaks out against Amendment 171: The current legal framework is sufficient

Alpro speaks out against Amendment 171: ‘The current legal framework is sufficient’ Plant-based beverage brand Alpro has joined calls to block the progress of Amendment 171, which would see a European ban on the use of dairy-like terminology to describe plant-based alternatives. The Danone-owned brand has added its name to a joint letter alongside the European Plant-based Foods Association (ESNA) and 90 other organisations represented by the European Alliance for Plant-based Foods. The coalition is calling on Member States and the European Parliament and Commission to oppose Amendment 171, arguing that it goes against EU consumers’ interests in transparent communication, fair competition and the bloc’s own climate ambitions.

Bunge Loders Croklaan eyes fats and oils: There is a lack of reliable organic supply

Bunge Loders Croklaan eyes fats and oils: ‘There is a lack of reliable organic supply’ Specialty fats and oils supplier Bunge Loders Croklaan is expanding its portfolio of organic fats and oils in Europe. According to the company, this will enable it to meet growing demand for organic products in a sector that currently faces under-supply issues. Bunge Loders Croklaan is growing its organic portfolio with what it describes as a ‘stead and scalable’ supply of organic-certified fats and oils, ranging from sunflower, rapeseed and soy to palm shea and coconut. The move lifts a ‘common barrier’ hindering companies from moving toward organic status: the difficulty of finding a reliable organic oils supplier.

ENGA pushes for non-GMO food labelling across Europe

The newly founded European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) is backing the expansion of genetically modified-free production across the bloc and supporting Member States looking to promote non-GMO labelling, says co-founder Alexander Hissting. A new members association representing the non-GMO food sector has set up shop in Brussels. The European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) was founded by the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) and the Austrian Platform for GMO-free Food Production (ARGE Gentechnik-frei). VLOG was established in 2010 to advocate for non-GMO food labelling, and in doing so, encourage greater GMO transparency on-pack. While VLOG’s non-GMO seal, called ‘Ohne GenTechnik’ in German, is ‘well established’ across its homeland, VLOG managing director Alexander Hissting saw potential for greater harmonisation across the bloc, he explained.
