Two months after businessman Henry Reynolds was elected mayor on a platform of killing the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace civic center, the Auditorium Committee dominated by his appointees votes to do just that. With pro-Monona Terrace members appointed by former mayor Ivan Nestingen now in the minority, Reynolds and his appointees vote 6-3 to terminate the contract with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and start from scratch.
Although the sharpest attacks on the project have involved criticism of Wright’s politics, lifestyle and business practices, Reynolds and his allies on the committee argue exclusively that the project as designed is just too expensive. The 1956 contract between the Foundation and the city set a limit of five and a half million dollars for the project which would combine an auditorium, exhibition hall, art gallery and community center; but when construction bids went out earlier this year,

As kids, my younger brother and I would snicker whenever my mother stopped to run her palms over what she thought was an exciting bit of a building. It could have been a limestone handrail at a shopping mall, a granite column at an old bank, or reclaimed wood at a hipster restaurant; sometimes, she would take our little hands and guide us to do the same. To this day, I can walk into a room and estimate its ceiling height because she taught us how to assess the highness and lowness of rooms. I’m also well versed in the slip resistances (a technical term for slipperiness) of a variety of flooring substrates. Believe me when I say that my mother really, really likes buildings.

Frank Lloyd Wright s architecture has always spoken to me. The simple lines, the geometric patterns, and the building materials of natural stone, wood, metal, and glass are calming and beautiful to me.
I lived in South Carolina for two years and there was a small Frank Lloyd Wright house around the corner from my house. I was always driving past it and absolutely fell in love with the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural style.

This amazing New York island house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is actually two houses, built almost 60 years apart. The original cottage was designed and built-in 1949. It was supposed to be over 5,000 square feet, but the owner ran out of funds so a 1,200 square foot cottage was finished instead. Then in 1995 it was bought and added on to using original Frank Lloyd Wright plans for the house. The house is on Lake Mahopac and is for sale right now for $9.9 million.
