Europe flood victims face massive clean-up

Europe flood victims face massive clean-up © Reuters Residents of Bad Neuenahr are already starting to clear their town Residents in regions of Germany and Belgium worst-affected by recent floods have begun the huge task of clearing their neighbourhoods, as the waters begin to recede. The scale of the damage is becoming clear, as rescue crews continue to look for victims. At least 170 people have died, and with many still missing the death toll could rise further. And there are fears that a dam weakened by the floods could burst. Inspectors say large parts of the Steinbachtal dam, south-west of the German city of Bonn, have come away leaving it extremely unstable.

Rescuers race to prevent more deaths from European floods

Fueled by days of heavy rain, the floodwaters also left thousands of Germans homeless after their dwellings were destroyed or deemed to be at risk, and elected officials began to worry about the lingering economic effects from lost homes and businesses. Elsewhere in Europe, dikes on swollen rivers were at risk of collapsing, and crews raced to reinforce flood barriers. Sixty-three people perished in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, including 12 residents of an assisted living facility for disabled people in the town of Sinzig who were surprised by a sudden rush of water from the nearby Ahr River, authorities said.
