CoastLine: Queer in the Cape Fear 2 - is don t ask, don t tell enough?

We meet a man who leads a local church and who volunteers on two foundations that support LGBTQ+ people and educational efforts. Rev. John McLaughlin talks about his work in the community, but he also shares his own story, which includes deep personal trauma. It’s that trauma that led him back to church and launched his search for a spiritual sanctuary where he could be gay and Christian.

YWCA will cohost a menstrual hygiene drive

YWCA Lower Cape Fear has partnered with Seeds of Healing, UNCW Department of Anthropology, Hawk’s Harvest, Frank Harr Foundation, New Hanover County League of Women Voters, and I Support the Girls to co-host Periods Don’t Stop for Pandemics. The campaign aims to raise period poverty awareness, fundraise menstrual hygiene donations, and advocate for the repeal and elimination of the current Tampon Tax in North Carolina. During a crisis, it becomes harder for people to manage their periods in a safe and dignified manner. Financial strain, job loss, and homelessness can all compound this challenge. In North Carolina, 20% of women and girls aged 12 to 44 and 25% of trans and non-binary people live below the federal poverty line, reducing access to menstrual hygiene products. Additionally, 63% of female students grades 7-12 in N.C. public schools attend Title I Eligible schools, meaning they are low-income and cannot afford basic menstrual hygiene products.
