Jaishankar calls on Mauritius ex-PM; briefs him on progress in ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday called on former prime minister of Mauritius Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan last year, and briefed him on the progress in the bilateral relations. Jaishankar, who arrived here in India s strategically key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean region on Sunday night from the Maldives on the last leg of his two-nation tour, met the 90-year-old leader after concluding talks with his son and current Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. Called on former PM Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Lady Sarojini. Congratulated him on being awarded the Padma Vibhushan last year. The warning was contained in a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry spokesman on reports of the imminent possibility of British arms supplies to South Africa. “India had already made it clear at Singapore that should Britain decide to supply any arms before the study group had completed its work, the functioning of the study group would be rendered infructuous and this could have serious implications for the very existence of the Commonwealth,” the spokesman said.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian National Academy of Sciences have written to education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal seeking withdrawal of the government’s guidelines asking universities to seek prior permission for conducting international webinars on certain subjects, saying such restrictions could halt all scientific discussions. Besides, UGC’s letter to vice-chancellors on the promotion of an examination on the cow has also attracted the ire of a section of academics. The online Kamdhenu Gau Vigyan Prachar Prasar Examination is scheduled on February 25. In an official order on January 15, the education ministry had said that clearance from the external affairs ministry will be required for holding international conference, seminar, workshop or training on security of state, border, northeast states, UTs of J&K, and Ladakh or any other issues related to India s internal matters.
