Shehbaz asks FATF to clarify Indian claim - Newspaper

LAHORE: PML-N President and opposition leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has asked the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to clarify that it is not being used against Pakistan at the behest of others (India). “Indian External Affairs Minister’s admission that the Modi government “ensured” that Pakistan stays on the grey list raises serious questions on the integrity of FATF’s decision-making process,” Mr Shehbaz said in a tweet on Monday. “The watchdog must clarify that it is not being used against Pakistan at the behest of others,” he asked. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday that India had “ensured” that Pakistan remained on the grey list of the FATF. “We have been successful in pressuring Pakistan and the fact that its behaviour has changed is because of pressure put by India by various measures,” the Indian minister said.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had confessed on July 18 that “the Narendra Modi government ensured that Pakistan remained on the grey list of FATF”. In response to the media queries on India’s disagreeable role in the FATF grey-listing of Pakistan, the spokesman said the Indian statement not only exposed its true colours but also vindicated Pakistan’s long standing stance on India’s

That was an understandable manoeuvre to prevent any Taliban grandstanding attack on them. Instead of the dramatic photos of the evacuation of the Saigon embassy, all we have as a visual is a frame of the detritus of the American civilisation left behind in Bagram, their biggest base. The developments in Afghanistan pose an agonising challenge for India. Since 2001, it has operated in the country, mainly in executing development programmes under the US/NATO security umbrella. Now the latter have walked away, and we along with many others are scrambling for a strategy.
