Florida Keys local governments have begun formulating their appeals to proposed changes to federal flood insurance maps, which could significantly increase insurance rates for local property owners once implemented later this year.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency published its notice in the Federal Register seeking comment and information regarding the preliminary coastal flood maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps or FIRMs.
Monroe County government, the cities of Key West and Marathon and the Keys-based Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (also known as FIRM) have begun working on appealing the propose map changes. The 90-day appeal window opens March 18, Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley said.

Community stakeholders can identify any concerns or questions about the information provided and participate in the appeal and comment periods for the maps.
FEMA will accept comments on the maps, as well as as appeals, through April 21, 2021.
The updated maps were produced in coordination with local, state and FEMA officials. Around Amherst: Day of Recollection is pause to remember COVID’s toll

AMHERST The town is joining a nationwide Day of Recollection to honor those who have lost their lives after contracting COVID-19.
On Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m., the town will mark the reflection on the pandemic with the ringing of the bells at Town Hall.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman is being directed to have town buildings illuminated during the hour-long remembrance period.
This week the Town Council adopted a proclamation remembering the more than 350,000 in America who have died with COVID-19 and honoring the 20 million infected with the coronavirus.
