The Ketchikan School Board is set to meet on Wednesday evening to hear the latest information from the acting superintendent about the Ketchikan School District s COVID-19 risk level assignments.
A COVID-19 outbreak in the community two weeks ago led to a surge in cases last week, many connected to students and staff at Ketchikan High School.
The district closed Kayhi to in-person instruction last week, but at the board s direction did not close other secondary schools in the district.
At the conclusion of an emergency board meeting last Wednesday, the board directed Acting Superintendent Katie Parrott to set Smart Start coronavirus risk levels for individual schools, rather than using one metric for the entire district.
KETCHIKAN (KDN) â Ketchikan on Wednesday set a new record for the highest single-day case total for 2021 thus far, with 13 cases counted by the local Emergency Operations Center.

Next year’s budgets will be the focus of the Ketchikan’s Borough Assembly meeting Monday night. The borough has been grappling for months on how to prepare a balanced budget given the loss of two cruise ship seasons.
With the unlikelihood of any large cruise ships coming to Ketchikan this year, borough staff are proposing a conservative $55.6 million budget that relies on the use of cash reserves to fund services at their current levels. There are no cost-of-living increases, and non-essential travel is eliminated.

Superintendent Beth Lougee’s contract doesn’t expire until February 2022. But earlier this month, Ketchikan’s school board announced earlier this month that Lougee would leave at the end of April.
