As part of a sweeping slate of climate policies announced Wednesday, the Biden Administration has banned all new oil leases on federal lands and water. Advocates are celebrating the move to curtail carbon emissions, while industry advocates in Louisiana worry it could decimate an already-struggling industry.
Biden’s executive order directs the Secretary of the Interior to stop issuing new oil and gas leases on federal waters and lands and prioritizes the preservation of public lands. He reiterated that the administration does not plan to ban fracking.
Tyler Gray, president of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association (LMOGA), warned in a press release that limiting energy production on federal lands and waters threatens the state economy.

Harvard Chan School experts tapped for Biden administration posts
January 22, 2021 – Two faculty members from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Sara Bleich and Benjamin Sommers and one former faculty member, Gina McCarthy, have been chosen for roles in the new Biden-Harris administration.
The appointments for Bleich and Sommers were announced January 20, shortly after the inauguration of President Joe Biden. McCarthy’s appointment was announced in mid-December.

Bleich, professor of public health policy in the Department of Health Policy and Management, will serve in the new position of senior advisor for COVID-19 in the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). In that role, she’ll lead efforts related to the pandemic, economic recovery, and federal nutrition assistance programs.

David Hayes, special assistant to the president for climate policy, brings decades of political experience to the White House, having fought polluting industries and Trump administration policies.
A two-time Interior deputy secretary, Hayes is a distinguished member of the White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy, which is directed by Gina McCarthy and Ali Zaidi, her deputy.
