Biden Jr. to choose Representative Deb Haaland of New Mexico as interior secretary, rebuffing criticism that they were standing in the way of her appointment over concerns about the party’s slim majority in their chamber. For weeks, rank-and-file House Democrats, progressive groups and tribal leaders have been pushing for Mr. Biden to select Ms. Haaland, who would be the first Native American to lead the Interior Department, and have grown frustrated over the belief that Democratic leadership might be blocking her.

Nancy Pelosi vouches for Deb Haaland as potential Biden pick to lead Interior Department

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer told reporters that Ms. Haaland would make an excellent pick and that he hasn’t tried to discourage Mr. Biden from tapping House members for the incoming administration. Mr. Biden has said the narrow margins in the House and Senate are factoring into his personnel choices. He’s already named Rep. Marcia Fudge of Ohio as his pick to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development and has named Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana as a senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. Both Mr. Hoyer and House Majority Whip James Clyburn expressed concerns last week about losing a third member, at least temporarily, as House Democrats head into the new Congress with a diminished majority.

SHOW TRANSCRIPT President-elect Joe Biden is nominating Democratic Congresswoman Marcia Fudge to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. She would be the second black woman to lead the department.  Fudge is the second Democratic member to leave the House to serve the Biden administration.  Congressman Cedric Richmond of Louisiana will serve as a senior adviser and Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.  While both Fudge and Richmond come from strong Democratic districts, special elections will need to be held to fill the vacancies.
