Hewitt-Trussville High School student starts petition to have Senior Awards Day

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE A Hewitt-Trussville High School senior started a petition after learning the school would not have a traditional Senior Awards Day. Instead, the school will post information online to showcase senior achievements. Mercy Powers hopes her petition will gain enough attention to allow the powers that be make a change. “This tough year has been a toll on many, especially seniors,” she said on the online petition. “We deserve to be awarded, we deserve to be recognized in person. All we want in our last few months of being a senior is some normalcy. No one wants their last few memories at HTHS to be virtual.”

By Sydney Melson The Birmingham Times No matter the age group, no matter the problem, Tawanna Morton finds a way to help people in a variety of ways through her substance abuse prevention program. “I had one young man who started selling drugs because his mom was a user,” she said. “One day, he got up [for school] and there was no power in the house. They had to wear uniforms [to school], and he didn’t realize he did not have on the blue pants for his uniform because, of course, in the dark you can’t tell blue from gray.”

Shaw named permanent director for schools foundation Photo by Erin Nelson. Shelley Shaw, executive director of the Hoover City Schools Foundation, seen Nov. 24 at Aldridge Gardens. The Hoover City Schools Foundation, like many nonprofits, had a challenging year in 2020 but was able to bring on a new executive director on a permanent basis. Shelley Shaw, the wife of Hoover Councilman Mike Shaw, had been serving as interim executive director for the foundation since October of 2019, following the departure of former Executive Director Janet Turner. A year later, the foundationâs board of directors unanimously decided to make that a permanent change.
