Print Opening day 60 years ago brought tens of thousands of shoppers to the new “modern-as-tomorrow,” Mission Valley shopping center. Now called Westfield Mission Valley, the mall originally was developed by the May Company after the City Council voted to rezone the property in 1958 for commercial use. From The San Diego Union, Tuesday, February, 21, 1961: Throngs Welcome Mission Valley Center Huge Crowds Attend Opening By Joe Brooks Tens of thousands of San Diegans yesterday accorded an enthusiastic welcome to the city’s newest institution, the spacious and modern-as-tomorrow Mission Valley Center, on its opening day. A huge crowd was on hand at the 80-acre development in Mission Valley for the formal opening ceremony at 11:45 a.m., and more thousands kept pouring in through the remainder of the day and evening.

Suspects sought in countywide grand theft, burglary spree Jaromir Chalabala and last updated 2020-12-31 09:18:44-05 SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Wednesday asked for the public s assistance in identifying and locating two suspects believed responsible for a series of grand thefts and burglaries at four shopping malls. Investigators said they believe the same suspects are responsible for these four cases: On Oct. 18 at 6:25 p.m., two unknown suspects entered the Kay Jewelers at the Westfield Mission Valley mall, smashed two display cases and stole several gold necklaces then ran from the business. On Nov. 16 at 6:46 p.m., two unknown suspects entered the Daniel s Jewelers at the Mira Mesa Mall. One suspect acted as a lookout and then left the store. The other suspect then smashed a glass display case with a hammer and stole several gold chains. Both suspects were last seen running towards the north parking lot behind the store.

On “Super Saturday,” typically the second-busiest shopping day of the year, hundreds of people lined India Street in Little Italy at midday, sipping coffees along the sidewalk, perusing the booths at the farmer’s market and drifting in and out of specialty shops for which the neighborhood is known. “We grabbed a few things,” said Chelsey Ward, who was visiting San Diego from Sun City, Ariz., with her friend Paulette Palladino. “I haven’t been to a farmer’s market in a long time, so it’s been nice to get out.”
