Lawsuit: Teen With Autism Died After Police Sat On Him For More Than 9 Minutes by Michelle Hunter, The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate/TNS | January 18, 2021 NEW ORLEANS The parents of a teenager with severe autism who died last year following an encounter with Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies have sued the Sheriff’s Office, claiming it is responsible for the actions of seven officers who restrained the teen in a face-down, handcuffed position for more than nine minutes while trying to take him into custody. Eric Parsa, 16, of Destrehan, lost consciousness and later died after being restrained by the deputies outside of a laser tag in Metairie on Jan. 19, 2020.

The suit, filed in New Orleans by Donna Lou and her husband, Daren Parsa, says they had to watch as their only child, Eric Parsa, suffocated in a shopping center parking lot in suburban Metairie on Jan. 19, 2020. The allegations in the lawsuit include excessive force and violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. “We are private people . but we understand that sharing Eric s story is the only way to bring change,” Lou said, weeping as she read a statement during a news conference on Zoom. Because she and her husband are witnesses, they could not answer questions, attorneys said. Eric regularly played laser tag, which he enjoyed. But after the Jan. 19, 2020, session at the Metairie strip mall, he went into a “melt-down” and began slapping himself and slapping and grabbing his father, biting his father hard enough to draw blood, according to the lawsuit.
