JobKeeper concerns fade as housing engine fires up

The chairman and chief executive team of Australia’s largest residential real estate company, Ray White’s Brian and Dan White, have not only retained all employees who were on JobKeeper, they have also started hiring.
The booming property market, lit by record low interest rates and growing at the fastest pace in 32 years, is driving huge employment gains in the real estate sector, which had been a big user of JobKeeper.
“We are off JobKeeper and we’ve actually seen a 20 per cent increase in our network staff to just under 12,000 people. Most of that has occurred in the last few months,” Dan White said.

As the English poet John Donne once (almost) wrote: no economy is an island. Except, of course, Australiaâs. The splendid isolation of our island continent â once supposed a curse â has in COVID times proved a cure, as unemployment falls and economic growth rebounds.
There are fears delays in the rollout of our vaccination program will derail our economic recovery. But they are likely overblown.
