Surf Life Saving Queensland jet skiers, a Westpac Life Saver Rescue helicopter, water police and coastguard members joined in the search. Officials said that up to 30 people took part in the search.
Authorities said they found the 64-year-old man at around 7pm, clinging to a marine beacon in the ocean, some 2.5km off Bribie Island. The man had swum about 2km to reach the beacon and climbed a ladder onto a platform.
Senior Constable Mark Muddiman from Sunshine Coast water police said that bar some minor injuries, the man was in good health.
Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Senior aircrewman Paul Brennan said the helicopter was on a routine patrol when they spotted the person. The helicopter was conducting a routine patrol along Sunshine Coast beaches when we spotted the body board rider caught in a rip, he said. The rescue crewmen was winched down and successfully rescued the male. He was returned to shore where he was met by volunteer surf lifesavers from Dicky Beach. Subscriber only A MAN who told police he fell asleep at the wheel before a serious head-on crash near Brunswick Heads will remain behind bars until next year. Aaron Joseph Baker, 36, was driving a Ford Focus north on Gulgan Rd at Brunswick Heads when he crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Hyundai i30 being driven by a 75-year-old man on the morning of Saturday, April 18 this year. A third car was damaged after the i30 spun around but that driver was uninjured. The 75-year-old was trapped in his car for some time and sustained serious injuries.
