Two-term Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe will not seek re-election, he announced Thursday. (Alfred Branch/Patch)
WESTPORT, CT Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe, a Republican, announced Thursday that he will not seek a third term this fall as the town s chief elected official.
In a statement, Marpe said it has been an honor serving Westport for the past seven years, but that he believes the town can continue to thrive with a new leader. While the Westport Town Charter does not place term limits on our elected officials, my experience in the private sector taught me that every organization benefits from regular changes in senior leadership, Marpe said, adding that he deeply appreciated the bi-partisan support and encouragement he received over the years.
10 Staples students have been chosen to perform in the Connecticut Music Educators Association (CMEA) All-State Festival on April 23 to 25.

In the All-State concert band, the students performing are Jason Capozucca ’23 (bassoon), Alex Hermus ’23 (euphonium) and Nina Lauterbach ’24 (mallet percussion). Witt Lindau ’23 (drums) will perform in the All-State jazz ensemble and Maya Vogelmann ’22 (alto) will perform in the All-State treble choir. Lindau and Moore were the highest scoring musicians in Connecticut in their respective categories, with Bishop and Pauliny placing third in their respective categories as well.
Community leaders and Westport residents assembled on March 27 at Jesup Green to protest Asian American hate and honor the memory of lives lost in the Atlanta shootings on March 16 and other incidents of violence against Asian Americans.
“Going to the rally was a very powerful experience for me,” Mia Vindiola ’23 said. “I also think that the statements Marpe and Scarice released are important to bettering our community and being more aware of racism in Westport.”
Other notable figures in the Westport community have expressed similar feelings, including Superintendent Thomas Scarice who addressed the racism directed toward Asian Americans in a separate statement released on March 22.
