The low number of cases came up during Monday’s Board of Education meeting, when Superintendent Thomas Scarice and supervisor of health services Suzanne Levasseur proposed that there be no health update at the final board meeting of the season, which takes place June 14. “As our school and town cases of COVID-19 are so low and it is the end of the school year, we will likely not need to continue with a health update at BOE meetings during the summer months,” Levasseur said in an email. “As we prepare to reopen in the fall, we will look at current trends and certainly continue this if needed to keep our school commun

Former Westport First Selectman John Kemish Passes at 93 Written by Kerry Anne Ducey It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of former Westport First Selectman John Kemish on April 25 at the age of 93. John served three 2-year terms as Westport s First Selectman from 1967 to 1973.  Prior to his election as First Selectman, John served as the town’s first professional Controller (now the Finance Director), where he improved the town’s credit rating from A to Aaa. As Controller, he played a pivotal role in the purchase of Longshore Country Club for the town under then First Selectman Herb Baldwin.

The town announced this year’s annual Compo Beach Independence Day fireworks will be canceled out of concerns for COVID-19 and uncertainty with the ongoing pandemic. “I am disappointed that this year Westport could not hold the large celebration we had hoped for,” First Selectman Jim Marpe said. “But our town has come too far in our successful battle to overcome COVID to risk a possible setback by conducting a major gathering prematurely.” The decision was made by town officials in collaboration with the Westport Police Athletic League’s board of trustees and in consultation with the health district.

State officials announced on Saturday that clinics could offer the one-shot vaccine again following a recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine had been paused so officials could look into reports of several women developing blood clots after receiving it.
