ALEXANDRIA, VA A celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr. will be held virtually in Alexandria this year on Friday, Jan. 15. The 48th annual program, titled The Fierce Urgency of Building the Beloved Community, is presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Planning Committee. It will premiere at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15. The celebration will feature opening remarks by Mayor Justin Wilson, a keynote address by former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, entertainment by two-time Grammy nominated singer and songwriter Eric Roberson, music from the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church choir, a poem by Alexandria Poet Laureate KaNikki Jakarta, and remarks by community activists and leaders.

Born in Taylorville, IL on September 22, 1927 to Orrin S. and Mary Nelle (Hanauer) Nash. On June 8, 1984 he married Sue Haycraft in Springfield, IL. He was a graduate of Edinburgh High School and served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was a graduate of Shurtleff College and received his Master’s degree from the University of Illinois, with a Specialist Certificate in Education from SIUE. He taught school in Edinburg and Girard, IL and Wood River-Hartford School District #15 where he became principal of Woodrow Wilson School. He was Superintendent of School District #15 for 15 years before he retired in 1984. He was involved in the Wood River Township Kiwanis Club, Wood River Rotary Club and the Gateway East Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. After he

John Henderson Sinclair, 96, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) pastor for more than 70 years and an ardent advocate for peace and social justice, died in Tampa, Florida, on Jan. 2. His father was a Scottish pastor from Wick, a town in the far north of Scotland, and his mother was from Glasgow. Both became missionaries to the United States. Their son attended Baker University from 1941 to 1944 and Temple University’s Graduate School of Education from 1947 to 1948. He received his B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1947 and his M. Th., also from Princeton Theological Seminary, in 1953. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Topeka in Kansas on May 26, 1947. He also served as the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America regional secretary for Latin America from 1960-1973.
