The Westmoreland-based Derek Woods Band took honors for Americana/Folk/Singer Songwriter Song of the Year for “Unforgiving Tree” during a livestreamed program that Woods and his band mates watched from their homes. “I was honored and shocked, though I had a good feeling about it,” Woods said. “I was just trying to stay positive.”

The Palace Theatre s VIP livestream concerts showcase local, original music

For Lindsay Dragan, the best part of being a musician is playing in front of a crowd. “That’s when I feel most alive,” she said. There hasn’t been much opportunity for that in the past year, but Dragan and her Pittsburgh-based band at least will be able to get onstage again as the first performers in “The VIP Experience (Virtually in The Palace),” a free Thursday night livestream concert series. Presented by Westmoreland Cultural Trust, the weekly concerts, beginning Jan. 28 and running through March 25, will feature regional bands playing original songs from The Palace Theatre stage. Shows will be available for viewing on The Palace Theatre and Westmoreland Cultural Trust Facebook pages. A free preview concert featuring folk/rock singer-songwriter Alan Getto is available until Jan. 28 on those pages.

Everyday objects and recycled materials are the foundation of works by Nicole Chmel Brown, in the first art exhibit of 2021 in the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center. “The materials I use in my art are recycled objects such as wood, wire, beads, washers, cardboard, toothpicks,” said the Westmoreland City resident. “When I run out of these materials and I haven’t finished my piece of art, I run to Joann’s, Michael’s, Habitat for Humanity, etc., to fill in the rest of the canvas.”

Animal Friends executive director Kelli Brisbane getting hands dirty in new post

Kelli Brisbane is getting her hands dirty in her new job. There’s nothing nefarious about it it’s just part of being the new executive director at Animal Friends of Westmoreland. Since taking over the role on Dec. 14, Brisbane already has fostered a dog and pitched in at the organization’s Youngwood shelter and large animal sanctuary in Unity. “It’s not as scary as I imagined,” she said of caring for farm animals on the 62-acre site. “They know their routines as soon as you open the gate at the end of the day, they go right in.
