Westmoreland group weighs in on lack of local input, challenges in vaccine rollout

Members of the Voice of Westmoreland, a local grassroots organizing group, raised a call for the county to establish a health department during an online town hall forum on the vaccine rollout in the region. The online town hall brought together representatives from Service Employees International Union, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Healthcare PA, the Greater Greensburg-Jeannette NAACP and Westmoreland Community Action as well as 220 households. Participants weighed in with questions and complaints throughout the two-hour forum Tuesday that featured state Sen. Lindsey Williams and speakers from U.S. Sen. Bob Casey’s office, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office as well as a panel of medical experts.

New play equipment coming for New Kensington s Summit Street Park

A New Kensington neighborhood park that was cleared out recently won’t remain empty for long. New play equipment is coming to Summit Street Park, city Councilman Dante Cicconi said. The park in the city’s Mount Vernon neighborhood is one of the city’s five neighborhood parks. One of the others, JFK Park, received new equipment when it was moved from one side of city hall on 11th Street and rebuilt nearby on Fourth Avenue. “We see the value of these neighborhood parks,” Cicconi said. “All these parks need work. We’re trying to maintain them as best we can.”

Greensburg plans to help businesses and individuals with covid relief money

Greensburg plans to use nearly $194,000 in federal CARES Act money to aid small businesses, provide rent assistance and help feed those in need. Municipalities received coronavirus relief funds through the existing Community Development Block Grant program. Greensburg submitted its application about three months ago, and recently learned it had been accepted, according to Mayor Robert Bell. Greensburg’s plans for the money have not been finalized, but leaders have determined three priorities, Bell said. The city will partner with the Greensburg Community Development Corporation, spending about $100,000 of the Cares Act money to help city businesses struggling due to the pandemic.

Official: Weather may be factor in dip in demand for state heating assistance

That’s down from the roughly 253,000 applications that were received during the same period in 2019.
