An event next month will honor those 76,000 American and Filipino soldiers who endured a 65-mile forced march in the Philippines as prisoners of the Japanese during World War II.

“I love my dogs. That’s probably the only motivation that would get me outside in this kind of weather,” the Hempfield resident said this week as she prepped three of her dogs for a sled-pulling run atop Laurel Mountain.
Another motivation is the camaraderie she enjoys with other members of the West Penn Mushers, a Facebook-based group of regional sled dog enthusiasts who harness their canine companions to sleds or skis for runs over snow, or to bicycles or other wheeled conveyances for runs on dry land.

East Suburban Artists League hosts Michigan artist
The East Suburban Artists League will welcome guest speaker and president of the Detroit chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America, Linda James, to its February meeting.
James will join the virtual Zoom meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 to share the skill she is passionate about. James will present a demonstration, share tips, strategies and principles that apply to her chosen medium.

Murrysville council members will vote Wednesday on a storm water ordinance update that, according to engineering technician Emily Mallisee, largely goes beyond county and state requirements.
“All of these are basically enhancing the rules and regulations we already have in place,” Mallisee said. “Our regulations weren’t too stringent, but they were more so than a lot of other municipalities had in 2016, and I think that’s helped Murrysville to be more ‘green’ over the years.”
