Though the Guyana-Suriname Basin has risen to the top of the oil exploration watch list, with the Exxon Mobil Corp.-led consortium and the Total SA-Apache Corp. duo set to drill two of the most-watched wells this year, the prolific basin is not without risks, analysts say.
Participants surveyed during a Westwood Global Energy Group webinar Jan. 20 placed Exxon’s Bulletwood prospect offshore Guyana above others as the well most likely to lead to a commercial discovery this year. It was followed closely by the Total-operated Bonboni prospect offshore Suriname.

Halliburton Claims Electric Frac First
Halliburton reported that it has deployed the industry’s first successful electric grid-powered hydraulic fracturing operation. The company noted that, compared to turbines and Tier 4 dual-fuel engines, grid-powered electric fracturing provides a means of achieving the lowest possible emissions profile.

Baker Hughes Reveals 67 Additional Rigs
Baker Hughes reported that the number of rotary drilling rigs operating in the United States and Canada rose by 67 recently. Against the year ago figure of 781, the U.S. rig count is down 421 drilling units for the period.

Oil and gas explorers are expected to pick up the pace in 2021 after being knocked off course last year amid the global coronavirus pandemic and oil price volatility that led to deep spending cuts and activity slowdowns.
Analysts at Westwood Global Energy Group anticipate seeing between about 70 and 100 high-impact exploration wells in 2021, though companies are still solidifying drilling plans. Such wells typically target more than 100 MMboe or frontier plays.
