Wesley Girls brouhaha: Adhere to GES directive and allow Muslim girls fast Muslim Coalition to Methodist church By Eric Nana Yaw Kwafo Listen to article The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana is urging the leadership of the Methodist Church to direct Wesley Girls Senior High School to allow Muslim girls to observe the Ramadan fasting. In the wake of the Wesley Girls High School religious controversies where the headmistress banned Muslim girls from fasting, the GES issued a directive that Muslims should be allowed to observe their religious obligations. But the Methodist Church of Ghana, which is the management of the school issued a counter press statement to rubbish the directive by the GES.

UDS Dean Of Education Slams Wesley Girls SHS Management

  Dean of the Faculty of Education, University for Development Studies (UDS), Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Gunu has stated that Wesley Girls Senior High School management’s attempted ban on Ramadan activities there was in contravention of efforts aimed at building tolerance and integrated communities. He condemned the decision that triggered widespread criticisms and advised like-minded school authorities to avoid it. According to him, the sensitive nature of this issue required that the Ghana Education Service (GES) and management of the school should be circumspect about their utterances and public statements. “Historically, some school authorities have been poor at tolerating practices of other faiths. Ghanaians need to do away with tendencies that continue to perpetuate division and sectarianism.”

Methodist Church’s position against Ramadan fasting at Wesley Girls discriminatory – Minority LISTEN 4 HOURS AGO Minority in Parliament says the position of the Methodist Church Ghana on the Wesley Girls Senior High School’s decision to prevent Muslim students from fasting during the holy month of Ramadan smacks of discrimination on the basis of religion. The church supported Wesley Girls High School’s decision in a statement released on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. Speaking to Citi News, the Minority Spokesperson on Education, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, said the Methodist Church s position is retrogressive. “The position taken by the Methodist Church is not the best. They should allow every Muslim in the school to fast. We should not discriminate on religious grounds. Let us come together and move forward. The GES’ position should be accepted.”

Allow Muslim Students To Fast - GES Directs Wesley Girls, Other SHSs

  The management of Wesley Girls Senior High School has been instructed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to allow Muslim students take part in the ongoing Ramadan fast. A press statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twumasi directed authorities of Wesley Girls High School as well as any other school to allow any such student who wishes to fast for any religious reason to do so.” On the other hand, parents who wish their wards to fast are also directed to write to the school indicating that the school shall not be held liable for any health condition of the student as a result of the fast. Staff, students, and the general public are to take note”
