We Haven t Given Up on North Wilkesboro, Says Marcus Smith

We Haven t Given Up on North Wilkesboro, Says Marcus Smith If we can think of a way to do something there, we re going to. North Wilkesboro Speedway is the legend that just won’t die. Despite inactivity for a decade and no NASCAR events in a quarter of a century, a subset of the fandom has not given up hope that something can be done with the hallowed grounds of what used to be the oldest continually operating stop on the Cup Series schedule. Of course, that title now exclusively belongs to Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, but also applied to Wilkes County, North Carolina until 1996. That’s when the track was sold to Speedway Motorsports Inc. and its dates given to Texas Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, respectively.

When Bristol dust settles, could North Wilkesboro rise?

Could the same be true of North Wilkesboro Speedway? After years and years of clamoring by fans, NASCAR finally this year committed to wholesale Cup Series schedule changes, adding a number of road courses — which many love — and also adopting some throwback style by adding a dirt race at Bristol this past weekend — which provided some nice variety and a pretty good show — and announcing plans to convert two-mile California into a half-mile while continuing to eye a return to the Nashville Fairgrounds — meeting the top demand of more short tracks. Justin Epley, The News Herald, Morganton, N.C. Well, North Wilkesboro certainly is a throwback. It’s a short track, too. And at the beginning of its life, it was dirt. With NASCAR already leaning in all of those directions anyway, could NWS be transformed into the sport’s own dedicated dirt track on a permanent basis?

Our Vision for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Schedule

Our Vision for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Schedule What is your realistic take for a Next-Gen Cup Series schedule? It’s the dawn of a new era in the NASCAR Cup Series. The Next-Gen car was built under the influence of Supercars, IMSA and IndyCar – meaning that road course racing is very much part of the longterm plan. However, there is also an equal parts push to reintroduce additional short tracks with new Fontana and a potential Nashville Fairgrounds revival. So, what could this schedule look like well into the next decade? For one, this isn’t a true fantasy schedule, so you’re not going to see North Wilkesboro, no matter how much we all want it. This has to be based in reality to a degree. The tracks need to be owned by NASCAR, Speedway Motorsports Inc., Mattco Inc., Dover Motorsports or IMS, or are worthwhile enough to be realistically leased out to them in the same way Circuit of the Americas and Road America were placed on the 2021 schedule.

Racin’ With Jason: Mixed reviews for dirt race Driver Joey Logano (22) leads Denny Hamlin (11) through Turn 4 during an NASCAR Cup Series auto race, Monday, March 29, 2021, in Bristol, Tenn. (AP Photo/Wade Payne) Wade Payne Published: 4/1/2021 6:18:31 PM Modified: 4/1/2021 6:21:38 PM The dust has settled over Bristol Motor Speedway, and Joey Logano emerged victorious in the NASCAR Cup Series’ first race on dirt since 1970. Reviews about the experience are mixed, though leaning toward positive. NASCAR was hampered by rain last Saturday and Sunday, which caused the Truck Series and Cup events to be pushed back to Monday. Speedway Motorsports Inc. spent around $2 million to transform Bristol from paved paradise to clay playground. SMI and NASCAR must have liked what they saw, because a race for next season was announced while Monday’s race was still going on.
