AstraZeneca appointments now available at Belmont hub August 4, 2021 You can book in your appointment today, with the available appointments starting from August 10. Hunter New England Health (HNEH) said you can secure your booking via the federal eligibility checker: https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines  The AstraZeneca vaccine is currently available to anyone 18 years and over, however informed consent needs to be provided. This means understanding the risks and benefits of vaccination using the latest information and advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).   If you have any concerns about receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine or if you’re not sue if it’s right for you, we suggest speaking to your GP before booking an appointment at the Belmont hub.

Testings numbers in the thousands for Newcastle July 29, 2021 Testing numbers are in the thousands for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie over the last month.  The latest figures from Hunter New England Health (HNEH) show for the week ending 4th July to the week ending 25th July, 25,421 people went and got a COVID-19 test in Lake Macquarie and in Newcastle there were 20,093 tests for the same period.  The biggest week was the week ending 4th July in Lake Macquarie with 7,759 people coming forward for a test.  That was also the biggest week for Newcastle, Maitland, Port Stephens, Muswellbrook and Singleton. After two exposure sites in the last month in the Maitland area, 12,062 people came forward for a test.

Hunter New England Health says it would like to see more of the region’s pharmacies authorised to administer the AstraZeneca jab. At present, just 22 pharmacies across New South Wales have supplies of the vaccine – including outlets at Uralla, Walcha and Guyra. Public Health Physician, Dr David Durrheim, says he expects the rollout will become more fluid over time, giving more regional residents the opportunity to be vaccinated. “Clearly, the more opportunities, the easier we make it for people to get vaccinated, the better.” (AUDIO IN PARTS)

University of Newcastle Two exciting new research studies that will look to identify those most at risk of developing dementia and then attempt to delay or stop its development are underway in the Hunter New England region. All that may be about to change with the development of several new drugs which may slow the progression of the disease and its symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, has long been thought to involve the buildup in the brain of plaques. These plaques are made of a protein called beta amyloid and a new type of antibody therapy which can remove these proteins has shown promise in other studies.
