Fragments of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been detected in sewage in the Hunter-New England area days after thousands of appointments were cancelled at a mass vaccination hub and doses redirected to south-west Sydney.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said she was “very concerned” by detections at three sewage plants servicing 400,000 people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and southern Port Stephens. There have been no recent local cases in these areas.
Appointments at the mass vaccination centre at Belmont, in the Hunter region, have been postponed to drive more vaccine supply to Sydney.
NSW recorded 233 new local cases on Wednesday, the bulk in Sydney’s south-west, west and central health districts.

The mass COVID-19 vaccination centre at the former Bunnings site in Belmont has opened its doors, with the first locals jabbed at the new centre this morning.
The clinic went through comprehensive testing last week and over the next three weeks will ramp up to full capacity, administering up to 20,000 vaccinations a week.
Hunter New England Local Health District Chief Executive, Mr Michael DiRienzo, said today was an exciting milestone as the vaccine rollout in NSW continues to ramp up.
“In just six weeks we have converted an empty warehouse to a built-for-purpose clinic, including medical treatment bays, waiting areas, a pharmacy preparation area, storage, staff facilities and public amenities,” he said.

The Hunter’s new mass COVID-19 vaccination hub is now open.
After six weeks of transformation, the former Bunnings Warehouse at Belmont delivered its first jabs on Monday morning.
More than 300 staff including nurses and pharmacists are working at the site, which will be able to deliver up to 20,000 shots per week when it ramps up to full capacity over the next three weeks.
Hunter New England Local Health District Chief Executive, Mr Michael DiRienzo, said it’s an exciting milestone in the state’s vaccine rollout.
“In just six weeks we have converted an empty warehouse to a built-for-purpose clinic, including medical treatment bays, waiting areas, a pharmacy preparation area, storage, staff facilities and public amenities,” he said.
The clinic will have the capacity to administer up to 20,000 vaccinations a week.
The Pfizer vaccine will be first to be administered.
Appointments will become available at the centre on Monday.
Up to 100 nurses, 25 pharmacists and around 200 other support staff will help run the centre.
“The COVID vaccine is our best chance of keeping the virus at bay and ensuring we keep our communities safe. I encourage everyone to get the jab when it’s their turn,” said Hunter New England Local Health District Chief Executive, Michael DiRenzo.
