Why are there so few new “classic” Christmas songs?
If you were to go full
Billy On The Street and start running up to strangers on the streets of some random American city to ask them to name a Christmas song, you’d probably get a pretty wide range of responses. (Don’t do this, folks, it being a pandemic and all.) But it’s also likely that the people who didn’t tell you to get the hell away from them with that microphone would name a song from before 1950. That, or they’d say “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” which is completely understandable.

Earlier this year, Taylor Swift scored a #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit with “cardigan,” the focus single from her chart-topping surprise album “folklore.”
This week, she scores another #1 – again with a surprise album’s focus track.
Indeed, the superstar’s “willow” starts atop this week’s edition of the all-genre song chart. “Willow” is the focus single from Swift’s newly released, chart-topping album “evermore.”
In conjunction with its #1 Hot 100 debut, “willow” takes #1 on the Digital Song Sales chart and #4 on the Streaming Songs chart. It does not yet appear on the Radio Songs listing but did amass a substantial amount of opening week airplay.
Iâm one of those folks who hates Christmas music. You know, the kind of music you hear on the radio or in department stores starting sometime around Halloween.
Now let me clarify by saying that Iâm not talking about the religious Christmas music. âOh, Holy Nightâ or âSilent Nightâ are wonderful, and I never get tired of listening to that.
Itâs the secular, popular Christmas tunes that drive me nuts.
It started when I was a kid and as Christmas Day dragged on and my Aunt Mary was droning on about her fabulous life (it wasnât by the way), I would make my way to my room and turn on my transistor radio, hoping for some Top 40 rock tunes.

As of press time at 11:30AM ET, “Best Rapper Ever” is #5 on the all-genre US iTunes song sales chart. Only Lily Rose’s “Villain,” Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Nelly & Florida Georgia Line’s “Lil Bit,” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” are currently selling at a faster pace.
“Best Rapper Ever,” moreover, holds the #1 position on the US iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart.
MacDonald acknowledged the latter achievement in a late Saturday Twitter post.
