NY hospital safety grades probe pre-COVID preparedness See rankings

New York State Team New York hospitals received mixed safety grades from a consumer watchdog group that analyzed conditions just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck last spring. Only 16 hospitals statewide, or 10.7%, received the highest A safety grade from Leapfrog, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit, while 30 hospitals received the second-lowest D grade. Just one, New York Community Hospital in Brooklyn, received an F. The review looked at a variety of serious health-related issues, including data related to infectious disease prevention metrics considered crucial to limiting the spread of coronavirus. “Seeing how well hospitals are doing on infection prevention, in general, may indicate how well they were able to control the spread of COVID inside their facility,” said Erica Mobley, vice president of administration at Leapfrog.

Hospital Visitation is Opening Up

Starting this Monday, April 5th, Rochester Regional Health has said patients at five of its area hospitals will be allowed up to two visitors a day, for up to four hours each. Patients who are going into labor will be allowed up to two visitors 24 hours a day, while patients living with developmental or intellectual disabilities can each have one support person 24 hours a day, with another visitor who can stay up to four hours. Any other patient may only have one visitor at a time.

Over the last two weeks there has been increased focus on rates of hospitalization connected to COVID-19. In fact, Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that if any region is on track to reach 90% capacity of its hospital beds – NY on PAUSE would be enacted. He also warned that a full-shutdown could be coming to the state after January 1st if the state doesn’t reverse the trend of increased hospitalizations. On Wednesday, Governor Cuomo said that the Finger Lakes and Central New York led the state in hospitalizations and positivity rate.
