Pandemic lesson: New York state develops farm-to-pantry food networks

Across the United States, large food banks were distributing 80% more food in spring 2020 than they had been a year before, as pandemic lockdowns pushed many people out of work. Yet many farms found themselves with unsold food as restaurants or cafeterias closed.  Around the nation, some nonprofits and governments saw opportunities to match unsold crops with people who needed them.  Why We Wrote This When the pandemic struck, a rise in hunger was matched by a surge in farms that lost much of their normal demand. Here’s how one effort to get food where it’s needed may have enduring benefits. Fourth in a series on hunger in America.

JBS said to be vying to acquire plant-based business Vivera

Brazilian meat processor JBS is said to be vying to acquire Dutch plant-based business Vivera. JBS is reportedly leading the charge to purchase Vivera and is in advanced talks with the firm, while other large consumer companies are also interested, according to sources with knowledge of the matter cited by Bloomberg, which said valuations could put a price tag of EUR300m (US$359.4m) to EUR400m on the deal. Vivera, founded in 1990 as Encko-Vivera, a traditional protein company with a presence in vegan and vegetarian products, went fully plant-based in 2019 when it sold the meat part of the business Encko to Dutch meat processor Van Loon Group. Vivera has a small presence in Brazil with a distribution agreement with meat giant BRF.

After 40 years, Ellsworth chamber to move to revamped space

By Staff With the last of four 10-year leases have expired in January, the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce will move into a refurbished space just a stone’s throw away this week. The chamber has occupied a spot on a pad at the Ellsworth Shopping Center on High Street since 1981, according to a news release. The original visitor center at 163 High St. had a small space, with a separate shingled roof bus stop and advertising space. The board of directors leased the location for $1 per year from the Van Loon family with four 10-year  renewals. In order to accommodate the growing staff and the need for more visitor information, the board took out a loan for an expansion of the space that included three offices, bathrooms, a larger display area and more. The staff moved back into the refurbished building in 1986.
