UGC allows top universities to set up campuses abroad
India’s top ranked universities with Institute of Eminence status, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, can now set up branch campuses abroad after India’s higher education regulator the University Grants Commission (UGC) this month amended its regulations to allow them to set up offshore campuses.
Public or private ‘Institutes of Eminence’ would have to submit an application to the Ministry of Education with details of their 10-year strategic vision plan and a five-year implementation plan, including academic plans, faculty recruitment, student admissions plan, research, infrastructure development, financial, administrative and governance plans, with clear annual milestones and identifiable outcomes, according to the UGC, which will also review the applications together with an Empowered Experts Committee.

According to the norms, IoEs shall be permitted to start a maximum of three off-campus centres in five years, but not more than one in an academic year. They will, however, require approval from as many as three ministries education, home and external affairs before they can venture out.

While Cognizant offered 1,418 students, TCS offered 1,321 and Infosys 778. Despite the pandemic, a total of 7,403 job offers were rolled out by 382 companies through virtual campus recruitments across VIT campuses in the country this year.
Students from all the four campuses of VIT (Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati and Bhopal) participated in the selection process. As many as 4,503 students have received multiple offers.
The results were announced by G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT and 3,517 job offers were rolled out by IT majors - Cognizant, Infosys and TCS. While Cognizant offered 1,418 students, TCS offered 1,321 and Infosys 778. These are the highest numbers offered by these companies this year across all the higher education institutions in the country, according to a press release.
