National Work Zone Awareness Week, in its 21st year, is a national public awareness campaign that spreads the message that we are all responsible for work zone safety. The Ohio Department of Transportation joined several other partners in safety to kick the week off with an event at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. Monday’s event featured an ODOT truck that was struck by a semi-truck on March 2. Allen County crews were sweeping the bridge decks at night on I-75 just south of SR 81 in Lima. Caleb Vorhees was in the truck hauling the arrow board and was on the side of the road, right of the white line. A semi left the driving lane, hitting the driver’s side doors. The semi bounced off and came to rest in the median. Vorhees, who is married and the father of two young children, suffered bruises and burns from the impact of the truck and side airbags as well

(WCJB) -Governor DeSantis has signed an official proclamation that April 26-30 of this year is Work Zone Awareness Week to remind motorists of the precautions needed to avoid accidents in and around work zones. According to crash data, between the years of 2016 and 2019, 47,000 work zone-related accidents were reported. Out of those accidents, 1,800 caused serious injury, and more than 300 accidents resulted in a fatality. “We preach safety, all the time. The highway patrol and local law enforcement preach safety as well. You know, a lot of it comes down to distracted driving and obeying speed limits. That’s something that, you know, motorists probably need to hear every single day,” Troy Roberts, FDOT communications specialist said.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is underway a public awareness campaign meant to spread the message that everyone is responsible for work zone safety. The annual spring campaign is held at the beginning of construction season to encourage caution in work zones. Lauren Borrell, public information officer for ODOT District 11, said the campaign gives the department the opportunity to raise awareness and alert motorists to the importance of keeping focus on the roadways while driving.

In July 2016, utility vehicles were included in Georgia s  Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over one lane when crews are working on the roadside. The addition of utility workers to the law helps ensure safety for linemen who may be working on the roadside at night or following severe weather to repair damaged equipment or restore power for customers.

She was joined by Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.  “We must all do our part to keep the roads safe for our workers during this construction season,” Governor Whitmer said. “Stay alert in construction zones, follow all posted signs, and slow down to protect our construction workers and save a life. Orange construction barrels are a positive sign that we’re fixing the roads, but they are also a reminder to exercise caution.”
