Christine Holifield is a part-time worker who can’t work full time due to a health condition.
In spite of her disability, Holifield is a self-employed independent contractor and business owner, doing work in auction houses. When auction houses closed at the start of the pandemic, the Dexter resident was put out of work.
The CARES Act came to the rescue, giving Holifield federal unemployment money through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. Michigan approved her for the federal benefits a year ago, on April 21, 2020.

Christine Holifield was shocked this summer when she got a letter in the mail from the state s Unemployment Insurance Agency telling her she had to pay back $10,000 in jobless benefits.
Holifield, who worked part time as a self-employed contractor making deliveries for an auction house prior to the pandemic, felt this was unfair after being approved for benefits initially. She was later denied after she said she wasn t available to work full time.
So she got a lawyer and appealed the decision to the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Commission, which is housed under the state s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and has the authority to decide on appeals.
