But only now are we seeing what she meant. Ironically, the man whose support made Ardern Prime Minister in the first place later undermined all her reform ambitions. Winston Peters prevented a capital gains tax, stopped hate speech legislation, and killed off the Auckland light rail project. These are just three examples of New Zealand First s handbrake on Ardern s former coalition government. You may even miss Winston for that.

‘Policy Making Madness’: New Zealand Pushes for Collective Bargaining in Radical Labour Law Reform The New Zealand government on May 7 unveiled a new collective bargaining system marking the biggest reform of the country’s employment laws since the early 1990s. The changes have been met with fierce opposition from the business community, who say the process would be compulsory and against international law. Woman wins $8k in compensation after losing job due to Covid-19 restrictions

A woman who lost her job after Covid-19 border restrictions were put in place has won $8000 in compensation, after the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) ruled she was unjustifiably dismissed. The Employment Relations Authority said the company running the Pelorus mail boat failed to consult properly over job losses resulting from Covid-19. Photo: Supplied Elisabeth Siegmund was working as a deckhand on Marlborough Tour Company s Pelorus mail boat when the pandemic hit. She started the job in October 2019 and was hired for the duration of the summer season, until the end of May 2020. But when the government announced a ban on cruise ship visits and the requirement for everyone arriving in the country to self-isolate for 14 days, the tour company told its employees there would likely be an impact on staffing.
