Oregon Tech Professors Go on Indefinite Strike

Oregon Institute of Technology’s faculty union went on strike Monday, saying it seeks to preserve the university’s traditions of shared governance, small class sizes and hands-on instruction. The union, which is affiliated with the American Association of University Professors, traces its concerns about the future of the institution to the arrival of Oregon Tech president Nagi Naganathan in 2018.
Mark Clark, professor of history, said during a virtual picket line event Monday that unionization was not a popular idea prior to 2018, as the university s Faculty Senate historically advocated for professors. OIT’s faculty union has declared its intent to strike. The university says the union has not acted in good faith.
The Oregon Institute of Technology filed
a petition Wednesday with the Oregon Employment Relations Board, asking the agency to declare a tentative faculty strike unlawful.
Earlier this month OIT’s faculty union, a chapter of the American Association of University Professors,
declared its intention to strike. That declaration came as the union and university had been bargaining for 16 months.
If the union strikes it said it will if an agreement is not reached by this coming Monday it would be the first public university faculty union in Oregon ever to do so.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. Faculty organized through Oregon Tech - American Association of University Professors (OT-AAUP) have declared their intent to lawfully strike. Their announcement was submitted to the Employment Relations Board and the Oregon Tech administration today, April 8th; a potential strike would begin no earlier than Monday, April 26.
The parties have been bargaining for 16 months and in mediation for almost six, yet still remain far apart on key aspects of compensation, benefits, and working conditions.

Negotiators in Portland police contract talks argued this week over whether the city has the right to create a civilian police oversight board that could independently discipline officers.
Steve Schuback, a private labor attorney serving as the city’ lead negotiator, and Deputy City Attorney Heidi Brown contended Wednesday that the city can decide who investigates police and who imposes discipline.
