Childhood Services Ireland cautiously welcome childcare funding arrangements for February Reporter:   ); Childhood Services Ireland, the Ibec group representing the Irish childcare sector, has cautiously welcomed the Department of Children’s funding arrangements for the childcare sector up to March 5. The group says that while there are a number of critical areas where further detail from the Department is urgently needed for providers to make informed decisions, the package should see providers through the next six weeks. Under the terms of the funding  arrangements, services which remain open will continue to receive 100% of their NCS and other legacy scheme funding, 70% of ECCE funding, and continue to receive the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) at the enhanced rate.

Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme has cost over €2 billion

Industry and Employment Correspondent The Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme has cost the state over €2 billion so far in wage supports for businesses affected by the pandemic. This is according to the latest statistics published by Revenue.  Since the EWSS was launched in September to replace the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme, the Government has disbursed €1.744 billion in wage subsidies for 505,600 employees, with a further €303m in PRSI foregone due to the reduced PRSI rate on the payroll supports.   45,900 employers have registered for the EWSS.  This figures includes 1,400 re-registrations , but excludes 2,500 employers who registered and subsequently cancelled their registrations.  The Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme replaced the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme last September, and allows employers to claim government subsidies towards the wages of their staff.

A new study carried out by Central Bank economists for Independent New s and Media (INM) and The Kerryman shows that Kerry was the county that suffered the greatest economic hit from the COVID-19 crisis and the series of lock-downs that have seen the national economy grind to a halt. The INM/Central Bank study - which examined the impact of the second major lock-down in October and November - found that more workers in Kerry lost their jobs than in any other county. According to the study in late November, almost half - 45 per cent - of Kerry s workforce were receiving some form of state benefit including the Pandemic Unemployment Payment; the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme or more traditional welfare payments.

Senator Kyne said that the introduction of the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme and the subsequent Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme supported households across the country and helped businesses stay afloat and as is the case with all income, payments under the TWSS were liable to income tax as the preliminary 2020 tax statements issued by Revenue last week to all PAYE workers showed.
