Government plans to step up worker checks risk delaying hiring amid the worst shortages for decades, recruiters warn

Ministers are “shooting themselves in the foot” with a looming Home Office clampdown that threatens to worsen the most acute worker shortages for decades, top recruiters have warned.
Global recruiter Manpower and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) urged ministers to extend a relaxation of rules on worker checks during the pandemic as firms struggle to fill more than 1m vacancies.
The right to work checks, which stamp out illegal employment, have been carried out online during the pandemic but the Home Office plans to return to in-person document checks on Sept 1.
