Commissioners Court proclaims Search and Rescue Week

During its May 18 meeting, the Hays County Commissioners Court adopted two proclamations, declaring May as Elder Abuse Month and May 23-29, as Search and Rescue Week in Hays County. Search and Rescue Week acknowledges the number of civilians that go missing due to criminal activity as well as seeks to provide closure to families of missing persons. Jonathan McComb is the lone survivor of his family of four from the 2015 Wimberly flood. After the flood and the loss of his family, McComb joined the Texas Search and Rescue organization, continuing his search for his family. According to McComb, this search was a large reason why he joined the organization and why he believes search and rescue groups are important.

Commissioners Court requests Public Defense Office

At its May 3 meeting, the Hays County Commissioners Court submitted a grant application for $1,085,325 to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission, Improvement Grant Program for the Hays County Holistic Public Defense Office and Managed Assigned Counsel Program, generating the request for a Public Defender’s Office. A renewal grant application was also authorized for submission to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission for the Indigent Defense Coordinator grant project in the amount of $77,292, for which the county will provide a cash match of up to 60%. The Commissioners Court proclaimed May 9-15 as Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, acknowledging officers who have passed while in the line of duty.

Hays County offers walk-up after-hours vaccine clinics

The locations of the of the first clinics will be: Sinai Pentecostal Church, 208 Laredo St., San Marcos on April 30 Santa Cruz Church, 1100 Main St., Buda on May 4 Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 Martin Luther King Dr., San Marcos on May 13 “I am eternally grateful to the U.S. Hispanic Contractor Association President, Frank Fuentes, for helping us in this critical effort during this critical time. TDEM also continues to help the Office of Emergency Management to coordinate additional no-appointment COVID-19 vaccine clinics,” Becerra says. “Later hours may offer more flexibility for those in our community who might have challenges in getting to a clinic by 8 p.m.”
