More than 400 staff of Whitley County and Williamsburg schools will receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at Whitley County Middle School over a three-day period this week.
Beginning Tuesday, the vaccines were distributed by the ARH hospital from Barbourville. Vaccines will also be distributed Wednesday and Thursday.
When staff arrived at the school, they brought the required paperwork with them as well as copies of the documents needed. A vaccine card was filled out for them and they were registered by hospital staff. Once registered, they would wait until a hospital worker directed them to a booth to receive their vaccine. After the shot, staff were directed to the school’s cafeteria where they were monitored for any reaction to the vaccine. Once the staff had waited the required 15 minutes and had not exhibited a reaction, they were free to return to their respective schools.

WHITLEY COUNTY - The Whitley County Board of Education has entered into a contract with a familiar architectural firm for the building of districtâs future Career and Technical Education (CTE) building.
On Thursday evening, the school board first approved a motion accepting a letter of interest from RossTarrant Architects in building the new CTE building. The letter comes after an advertisement for bid was published by the school district.
Superintendent John Siler said the school district and architectural firm have had a working relationship for more than two decades.
âTheyâre very knowledgable of our district and all of our buildings. Theyâve been the architect on most of our buildings, all the recent buildings over the last 20-25 years,â Siler said. âThey just provide a great service. Theyâre a phone call or an email away,â he added noting how quickly the firm typically responds.

Since the start of the current school year nearly every Whitley County school district student has been learning virtually from home using school district issued Chromebooks for their instruction, and their instructors have been teaching virtually.
On Dec. 10, the Whitley County Board of Education recognized the team responsible for helping keep all this technology working by presenting the six members of the Whitley County School District Technology Department with the December Above and Beyond Award.
The board hands out the award on a nearly monthly basis to individuals or groups that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their work for the school district and its students.
