Louisiana tops Southeast in sequencing COVID-19 cases

Louisiana, a state long accustomed to being at the bottom of rankings, leads the Southeast in genome sequencing of COVID-19 cases at more than six per 1,000. That bit of good news about sequencing in Louisiana is tempered by some bad news. The United States is lagging behind when it comes to genome sequencing of COVID-19 cases. In mid-January, the nation was sequencing a little more than three in 1,000 cases. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom performs genome sequencing on 49 out of every 1,000 COVID-19 cases there. To some, this may seem like just another failure of the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic. Genome sequencing could fall in line with lack of personal protective equipment, not having enough COVID-19 tests or running out of COVID-19 vaccine.
