Daytona Beach, FL – With the perfect beach weather forecast for Mother’s Day, Volusia County Beach Safety (VCBS) is expecting big crowds today. They also say midday high tides are not expected to have a major impact on beach driving and surf conditions are expected to be relatively calm. A reminder: if you plan to use Dunlawton Avenue to get beachside, there’s a road detour at the railroad crossing between Spruce Creek Road and U.S. 1. VCBS suggests that to reduce traffic backups, anyone traveling in the area is encouraged to adjust their route to avoid this temporary road closure. In anticipation of the busy weekend, and with COVID-19 an ongoing concern, beachgoers are encouraged to access the beach in a less-populated area. Looking for a job? Volusia County Beach Safety is recruiting for summer lifeguards. Captain Tamra Malphurs said the agency is having a hard time pulling in lifeguards this year.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Looking for a job? Volusia County Beach Safety is recruiting summer lifeguards.
Captain Tamra Malphurs said the agency is having a hard time pulling in lifeguards this year. Our numbers are down. They’re not quite where we want them to be. We are going to have a third recruit class, she said.
She said she can’t pinpoint the exact reason but thinks it could be connected to an overall workforce shortage.

Daytona Beach, FL – Volusia County Beach Safety’s (VCBS) Junior Lifeguard tryouts begin this weekend and will continue every Saturday in May and on June 12. This is not a learn to swim program. The tryouts are to qualify for a week-long camp where professional lifeguards will offer participants a chance to learn about water safety and first-aid techniques. Junior lifeguards will also take part in daily team relays involving surfboard paddling, swimming, running, and beach flags. To qualify, junior lifeguards must be able to swim 100 yards within two minutes and 15 seconds, tread water for five minutes, and swim underwater 10 feet. You do not have to register to try out.
