Schools right to join suit vs vaping companies

Volusia County school officials know what’s going on. They see students palming slim, featureless boxes, brightly colored pods or bottles labeled “Don’t Care Bear,” “Frozen Fruit Monster” or “Candy King.” They hear them talking: The brand name “Juul” has become a verb, and there’s a whole new vocabulary associated with the use of e-cigarettes, including the particularly insidious rebranding of the word “juice.” Many of them are old enough to remember a time when cigarette manufacturers targeted kids with equal fervor, with cartoon characters like the louche Joe Camel or lovingly shot ads depicting smoking as effortlessly cool — ads that were, in disproportionate measure, seen adjacent to schools and playgrounds. And they understand the brutal economy behind tobacco companies’ marketing efforts, because they were themselves ensnared, and know how easy it can be to become addicted. How hard it is to break free.

Volusia high school students head outside for hands-on science lessons

Louise Chapman has been heading up the Volusia County School District’s adjunct science classroom long enough to know that sometimes, students need to see things to understand them. She’s met students who think that Spruce Creek eventually feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Students who have never been fishing. Students who think the plankton they’re looking at under the microscope will look like the cartoon villain of the same name from SpongeBob SquarePants. Students who don’t want to participate, but then end up asking to come back. They just don’t know any better. That’s why Project IBIS, which serves as an outdoor, adjunct science classroom for the district’s high schoolers, is so important.
