Long-time Daytona Beach Activist To Be Honored Saturday

Jun 10, 2021 | 11:27 AM Daytona Beach, FL – A naming ceremony is set to commemorate long-time Daytona Beach community activist Norma Bland this Saturday at 11 a.m. The new multipurpose field at Derbyshire Park will be named the “Norma J. Bland Football & Soccer Field.” Mrs. Bland passed away due to COVID-19 in July 2020. On February 3, 2021, the Daytona Beach City Commission unanimously passed the request to name the field after her. The city of Daytona Beach issued a memorandum with Mrs. Bland’s biography and accomplishments which can be seen at codb.us. City To Dedicate Field To Late Local Activist A number of local dignitaries will speak during the ceremony, including Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, city commissioners Paula Reed and Danette Henry, and Daytona Beach NAACP President Cynthia Slater.
