Only one Whatcom region sees COVID rate increase; another passes vaccination milestone The Bellingham Herald 4 days ago David Rasbach, The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham, Wash.) May 26 Six of Whatcom County s seven school district regions saw their COVID-19 infection rates decrease last week, and one of those six regions also surpassing having half of its residents initiate vaccination. The region covered by the Mount Baker School District was the only area within Whatcom County to see its two-week total of new COVID-19 infections per 100,000 residents increase last week, according to data released Tuesday, May 25, by the Whatcom County Health Department. But Mount Baker was still one of four regions to have a rate lower than 200, joining Bellingham, Blaine and Ferndale.

» Local health department says no to Canadians getting Point Roberts vaccines

By Joe Teehan May 18, 2021 9:46 am KGMI WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Whatcom County has shot down the Point Roberts fire chief’s idea to use the peninsula’s extra vaccines to help our neighbors in Canada. Chief Christopher Carleton offered to establish a pop-up clinic to serve Canadian citizens with ties to Point Roberts along with local residents. But the Whatcom County Health Department said in a statement that their priority is to ensure that county residents continue to have access to vaccines, and that the county is not in a position to be an option for the millions of Canadians who live in the lower British Columbia mainland.

Point Roberts wants to share vaccine supply with Canada - Whatcom County says no

Point Roberts shares its only land border with Canada, where only 3% of the population is vaccinated. Author: Chris Daniels Updated: 1:55 PM PDT May 16, 2021 POINT ROBERTS, Wash. Should the U.S. lend a helping hand to Canada, and establish a border vaccination clinic? Point Roberts Fire Chief Christopher Carleton thinks so.   I think Canadians should have the right to come across and get vaccinated here, Carleton said. Point Roberts shares its only land border with Canada, which has been closed for more than a year. The small town can only reach the rest of Washington state by ferry.  Carleton offered to establish a pop-up clinic of sorts in his tiny town on the 49th parallel. He says more than 80% of his residents are vaccinated, and Point Roberts, like other Whatcom County towns, are flush with vaccine at a time when its Canadian neighbors are not.
