The Curious Construct of Active Learning

Read the Full Text (PDF, HTML) Active learning has become a ubiquitous construct in education particularly undergraduate education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). However, despite its prevalence, active learning remains an unclear construct. Different researchers and educators may have different definitions of what active learning is and which activities foster active learning and improve learning outcomes. In this issue of Psychological Science in the Public Interest (Volume 22, Issue 1), Doug Lombardi, Thomas F. Shipley, and teams of researchers in STEM synthesize findings on STEM learning to provide a clear and coherent conceptualization of active learning and offer guidance on research and practice. A 4 a.m. phone call on April 17, 2020, left Buffy Trowse screaming. She frantically woke her family for a 40-minute drive to Bellingham, and waited eight hours in a hospital parking lot, unsure if her daughter would live. That date is a day to be remembered for Buffy and her family. It was the day her daughter and former WSU student, Yashleen Singh, survived a traumatic car accident. Buffy said their lives changed after that accident. Yashleen, 20, attended WSU prior to her car accident last April. UC Davis Joins National Academies Partner Network to Prevent Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

by Andy Fell March 02, 2021 UC Davis will join a new partner network to the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. UC Davis is among thirteen higher education-focused organizations in the inaugural group of network partners, which will share their work to prevent and address sexual harassment in higher education. Delmendo “We’re pleased to participate in the Action Collaborative Partner Network,” said Wendi Delmendo, chief compliance officer for UC Davis, who will represent the campus in the network. “We are hoping to enhance our already strong sexual harassment prevention program by learning from the best practices of other institutions both within and outside of UC.”
