Family members of Rejaul Karim Reja said that he died because of torture and that there were numerous injury marks in his body. Reja died yesterday morning at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) where he was being treated in police custody. Director of the hospital Bakir Hossain said the young man died of excessive bleeding through his rectum and urinary tract. Grieving family members said Sub-inspector Mohiuddin Mahi of Detective Branch (DB) in Barishal beat up Reja, leading to his death.

The husband, Himu, was sent to jail yesterday after he admitted to police that he poured kerosene on Nipa Begum and set her on fire, said the law enforcers. The victim, Nipa, was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal with critical injuries, said KM Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Barguna Police Station. Quoting family members, the OC said Himu, a tailor, recently married another woman without the consent of his first wife Nipa, who then filed a case with the Women and Children Repression Control Tribunal against him.
