A new drug extracted from seaweed and inspired by traditional Chinese medicine has come to the United States, where researchers hope it will provide the breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment that has eluded us for nearly two decades.
The drug oligomannate has an imposing name but a humble origin. Its active ingredient is drawn from brown algae and evidence suggests that it can reduce inflammation in the brain in a way that benefits people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
The National Institute on Aging considers Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a brain disorder. Other descriptions characterize it as a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder. Scientists know there is a loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, which regulate one’s voluntary movements.
But there’s a disturbing limit to what we truly understand about this disorder. According to the NIA, “scientists still do not know what causes cells that produce dopamine to die.” One investigator with a research laboratory in the Van Andel Institute’s Department of Neurodegenerative Science wants to figure that out.

The lab, with its focus on PD, wants to know more about how cells and cell-to-cell communication in the brain are affected by Parkinson’s. The Chu Lab is on a mission to “identify mechanisms that contribute to progressive degeneration of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, and abnormal circuit activity that underlies the devastating motor symptoms of

One of the key objectives of the report was to understand the primary growth drivers and estimate the future size of the 3D cell culture market. Based on multiple parameters, such as business segment, price of 3D cell culture products, and likely adoption of the 3D cell culture products, we have provided informed estimates on the likely evolution of the 3D cell culture systems market in the mid to long term.
An insightful assessment of the current market landscape of companies offering various 3D cell culture systems, along with information on a number of relevant parameters, such as year of establishment, size of employee base, geographical presence, 3D cell culture format (scaffold based products, scaffold free products and 3D bioreactors), and type of product (hydrogels / ECMs, micropatterned surfaces, solid scaffolds, microcarriers, attachment resistant surfaces, suspension systems and microfluidic syst
