In commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, on the fifth anniversary of Federal Law No 3 of 2016 on child protection, best known as “Wadeema’s Law”, and in preparation for our celebration of Emirati Children’s Day on March 15, we wish to reflect upon our progress on children’s rights and our commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights.
We in the UAE enjoy an environment in which we can openly discuss how to improve existing laws, institutions, policies and services to advance the promotion and protection of children’s rights. Our nation is young, and in this spirit, we have given priority to children’s rights, as a prosperous future depends on their well-being.
The campaign held on @sharjahchildfriendly is aimed at encouraging children to share their understanding and experience of playing through posting original creative videos on social media. It is open until the end of March with great prizes up for grabs.
According to Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Executive Director of Sharjah Child Friendly Office, ‘Children’s rights are indivisible; children cannot be given some of their rights and be deprived of others. Play is a fundamental right that every child should enjoy, as it is vital to both psychological and physical development.’
Dr Hessa added that play is also crucial in discovering and unleashing talents and capabilities and gaining essential life skills.

The kit will help youngsters express themselves through art, singing, dancing and more.
Unicef’s new tool kit to lift youngsters’ spirits amid Covid challenges has reached child and youth organisations in Sharjah.
The UN agency has partnered with the Sharjah Child-Friendly Office (SCFO) to distribute the kits across the emirate’s centres for the youth.
“The adolescent kit helps them explore the arts through activities that focus on drawing and painting, singing and dancing, playing musical instruments, and creating stories, poems and plays. The kit also provides them with opportunities to innovate, experiment, solve problems and explore new ideas, including developing solutions to local and global challenges,” said Dr Hessa Al Ghazal, executive director of SCFO.
