Topeka s St Patrick s Day parade, set for March 13, has been postponed

Topeka s St. Patrick s Day Parade committee has made the decision to postpone this year s festivities, parade master Tom Kilmartin announced Sunday. The parade, scheduled to take place March 13 in downtown Topeka, has been postponed because of COVID-19 concerns. The Topeka community continues to see a rise in cases and community spread remains in the uncontrolled index on the Shawnee County Health Department s weekly community transmission scorecard. This decision has been reached in an abundance of caution to ensure that we are doing what is necessary to keep the residents of our community safe and healthy, Kilmartin said. The parade committee has decided to reschedule the parade for Sept. 18 and call it the Halfway to St. Patty s Day Parade.

Free COVID-19 testing expands to Shawnee County businesses Businesses and organizations in Shawnee County could soon have access to free COVID-19 tests for its employees. Businesses interested in the free, saliva-based PCR tests must fill out a “survey” to request tests, according to a Shawnee County Health Department news release. Craig Barnes, division manager of the Community Health Outreach and Planning department, said the tests given to businesses are the same tests that are being used at the three free testing locations in the county. Free tests at the three testing locations were originally scheduled to end in December, but testing availability was extended through January, he said.
