An accidental fire late Tuesday morning killed two cats and a dog while significantly damaging a single-story house in southeast Topeka.
No people were hurt, as the two occupants who were present got out before firefighters arrived, said Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
Another dog was taken to an animal hospital from the scene after Topeka firefighters responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the blaze at 3517 S.E. Girard, Harrison said.
Five adults were displaced by the fire, he said.
Preliminary investigation indicates the blaze was caused accidentally by unattended cooking, Harrison said.
Damages were estimated at $15,000, including $10,000 to the house and $5,000 to its contents, he said.

Longtime Topeka attorney George Pearson said Wednesday he had removed a brush pile and posts he put up to block entry to a section of the Landon Trail that passes through property he owns in southeast Shawnee County.
Pearson had said Tuesday that information he received from the Shawnee County Appraiser s Office convinced him he was within his rights to place the barriers at the trail s entrance to property he owns just northeast of S.E. 101st and Shadden Road.
