SIDNEY – More work has been completed on the Beige Building at the Shelby County Fairgrounds while another proposed project has been shelved for now.
During its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Shelby County Fair Board members learned gutters have been installed on the Beige Building. A new water heater also has been installed to replace the old one that was leaking.
The board has completed several projects at the building during the past several months, including renovation of the restrooms, ceiling and kitchen floors. An Ohio Department of Agriculture grant funded renovations to the building.

Board of Elections increases deputy director’s hours
By Kyle Shaner - kshaner@sidneydailynews.com
SIDNEY – The Shelby County Board of Elections authorized Deputy Director Collin Claywell to work an additional five hours a week during its Feb. 16 board meeting.
With Clerk Trina Reithman on leave and a requirement to implement directives from Secretary of State Frank LaRose, the Board of Elections needed to increase staffing, Chairman Jim Kerg said. Claywell offered to work an additional five hours a week indefinitely, bringing his weekly total to 37.5.
“Short of hiring temporary help, which we don’t have any budget for, I don’t see how we accomplish what we need to accomplish without asking one or more of the staff members to expand their amount of time,” Kerg said.
A lifetime of collecting
Ace Bachman, of Houston, puts away an 1879 Remington Hepburn rifle at his booth while selling at the Shelby County Gun and Knife Show in the Beige Building at the Shelby County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Jan. 30. Bachman said he has been collecting guns since he was 9-years-old. He is now 82-years-old. At the age of 9 Bachman was swimming at the Minster swimming pool when a man asked him if he would be willing to mow his lawn for the summer. Bachman told the man he would talk about it after he finished swimming. When finished the man took Bachman to his she. Bachman didn’t see a lawnmower anywhere. The man told him to look up and Bachman saw a manual hand push lawnmower hanging from chains. The man said he would give Bachman a 20 gage bolt action shot gun at the end of the summer as payment. After a long summer slow hard work Bachman earned his first gun.
